Among the many initiatives taken by Tata Trust for the development of the Vijayawada constituency, removing Open Air Defecation (ODF) was one of the major ones. A healthy lifestyle was promoted in the constituency with this very promising project.
Planning: One of the major causes for diseases in the 265 villages of the constituency was open defecation. Thus TATA Trusts launched Swachh Krishna Mission during the Micro planning activity to make the villages ODF. They partnered with 3 NGOs - CPF, MARI and AGS for rolling out the project all over the district.
Implementation: They needed to know the the exact number of toilets to be constructed. Thus a baseline survey was organised all over the district. At the same time, to incorporate a slightly unfamiliar habit amongst the locals, they were educated by programs like Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS), Information Education and Communication (IEC) and Behavioural Change Communication (BCC) programmes.

Reformation: Good quality toilets were developed and commoners were educated about the importance of sanitary hygiene. Removal of OAD is a prominent step in making Vijayawada a healthier town.
